A Heavy Destroyer deployed by the Aquarian Imperial Navy. It is based on the SP-AX Pattern 2 (S2) upgrade package, converted for Imperial Navy service. The primary upgrades include enhanced Sensors and Fire Control systems, a larger powerplant and stronger shields. SP-class destroyers form the backbone of the AIN's heavy escort fleet, this versatile combat platform is primarily intended to engage in CQC-range (<1000 KM) in a defensive role, however it is capable of providing an effective mid range weapons platform in a ship of the line role similar to the Vengeance-class Heavy Cruisers of the Old Federal Navy.
The primary armament of five, dual-linked, quad-barrel rotary mass driver turrets are built to fire medium velocity munitions of 225MM caliber at a high rate of fire, allowing SP-class destroyers to lay down area denial against smaller vessels with fragmentation munitions, or armour-piercing munitions against larger warships.
The Forebear of the SP-class, the SP-AX Sleipnir, still in UAS Reserve service, was built to replace the aging, thousand-year-old Farlease-class Light Cruiser. While the SP/AX is classified as a Destroyer in AFN/AIN terms, it is actually bigger and more heavily armed, with stronger armour than the Farlease-class it replaces, whilst being faster and more agile to boot. Unique among the light warships of the AFN/AIN is the spinal armament. In contrast to the warship's medium/short range escort duty, SP-class may also provide stand-off range fire support to large battlegroups, also allowing this relatively small ship to effectively combat enemy capital ships.
